We are lucky enough to have many waterways on our doorstep in West Norfolk, including some globally significant chalk streams. Huge volumes of water travel through the water systems and into the North Sea via the Wash, with the Great Ouse being the channel most of those rivers discharge into.
You might think that would mean a large quantity of rubbish is floating around in our local water. While I’ll be the first to admit that water quality needs to improve, the volume of rubbish/litter visible in the waterways of Norfolk is actually pretty small. Having said that, I don’t often return from a paddle without fishing something out of the water.
Having said that The Big Paddle Clean up is a great opportunity to raise awareness around the national problem of rubbish in the water. My aim will be to get out the water as often as possible during the two week campaign at different spots in the area and collect what rubbish I can find!
If you want to join me that would be great, drop me a message. I’ve ordered some resources, but all we really need is a bag/bucket to put the rubbish in!
